About the Reference Formatter

This free reference formatter converts any citation or DOI into six major academic citation styles: APA (7th edition), MLA (9th edition), Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, and Vancouver. Simply paste your reference and get all formats instantly.

You can enter references in multiple formats: a citation in any style, a bare DOI (e.g., 10.1038/s41586-023-06221-2), a doi.org URL, or a BibTeX entry. When a DOI is detected, the tool looks up the full metadata from CrossRef for the most accurate formatting.

All formatting is done server-side with no data stored. The tool handles author name formatting, journal abbreviations, volume/issue/page formatting, and DOI URLs according to each style's specifications.
